Innovation Village is hosting an art exhibition that features works by Burundian visual artist Nelson Niyakire, inspired by the female-only Umoja Village, located Samburu Country, 380 kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya.
The village is a sanctuary for homeless women and girls – fleeing violence and forced marriages – the village stands against the traditional subordinate position of women in the Kenyan society.
According to Innovation Village, Nelson’s artworks pay tribute to the inhabitants of the village, by creating an imaginary village of women from all corners of Africa, seeking a safe haven grounded on unity, definance and re-inventing of oneself. A story of dreams, culture and beauty.
