Ideas, Stories, and Profiles

Angell Mutoni is a twenty-five-year-old artist who entered the entertainment scene seven years ago. I first heard her perform at Spoken Word Rwanda sometime in 2012 and she was amazing: everyone who had a good taste of lyric knew she was headed somewhere. Her latest is a music video of a song called ‘Imbuto’, which offers a relaxing mix of hip-hop and R&B music.

Angell work doesn’t look to Kigali’s mainstream music and she sings primarily in English – that’s probably why you’ll hear very few people talking about her. But in some of her lyrics, she mixes with Kinyarwanda and French to bring through an ingredient of what it means to be twenty-five in this part of the world. Her work feels strong and is of a passionate voice.

Imbuto is a part of ‘Seedling‘, an extended play record of four songs she released in June this year. You’ll love it as much as I did.
